The Boston Red Sox were supposed to be in contention for the AL East in 2026, but they've gotten off to a bad start, losing five straight games since winning their season opener.

They look to get back on track this afternoon when they open an interleague series against the San Diego Padres, who have also gotten off to a slow start at 2-4.

Let's dive into the odds and my best bet for this afternoon's game.

Padres vs. Red Sox Best Prop Bet

  • Fernando Tatis Jr. Home Run +600

In today's edition of Daily Dinger, I wrote about why I'm betting on Fernando Tatis Jr. to hit a home run this afternoon:

Sonny Gray gets the start for the Red Sox tonight, and he's had some issues giving up home runs the past couple of seasons. He gave up 1.2 home runs per nine innings pitched last season, and then he gave up a home run in just 4.0 innings in his first start this year.

Fernando Tatis Jr. is looking for his first home run this season after hitting 25 last year, so let's bet on him to hit his first of 2026 this afternoon.

Padres vs. Red Sox Prediction and Pick

I'm going to bet the Padres to pull off the upset this afternoon and hand the Red Sox a sixth-straight loss. I'm not a believer in Sonny Gray, and I think we're going to see some significant regression from the 36-year-old. He gave up six hits and three earned runs in his first start of the season.

Meanwhile, Michael King is coming off a season in which he had a 3.44 ERA across 15 starts, and he pitched five scoreless innings in his first start of the 2026 campaign, giving up just one walk. I expect him to carry that momentum into this afternoon.
