When it comes to gambling, you always have options. But it's important to know what they are. That's why Sports Illustrated is breaking down all the terms you need to know to help you win a little more cash. When you go to place a bet, you take a look at the standard point spread and game total options. But don't forget to take a look at the alternate lines available. 

When bookmakers post their list of opening odds, they also add alternate lines as prop betting options. Depending on the sport, alternate lines can be several points higher or lower than the standard odds. For example, competitions that are normally low scoring like the NHL and MLB, bookmakers may offer a -0.5 or a -1 alternate odds, along with standard -1.5 point spreads. If you're betting on football, odds can range from 1 to 14 points higher or lower than the main point spread. Here's the thing though when it comes to alternate lines, you have to be willing to pay extra juice for a more favorable line. But hey, that is why they call it gambling.
