Arizona State fires head coach Herb Sendek after 9 seasons
Tuesday March 24th, 2015

Arizona State has fired coach Herb Sendek, according to Jeff Goodman of ESPN.

Earlier Tuesday, Sporting News and CBS Sports reported that Sendek would meet with the school's athletic director to discuss the future of the program.

"Multiple sources told Sporting News his position was tenuous," according to the report. Arizona State finished 9-9 in the Pac-12 and 18-16 overall.

Sendek's Sun Devils lost in the opening round of the Pac-12 tournament to USC, the league's worst team, after squandering a double-digit lead in the second half.

In September, Sendek and the school agreed to a three-year contract extension that would keep the coach in Tempe, Ariz., through the 2018-19 season.

Arizona State beat American Conference Tournament runner-up Connecticut in the first round of the NIT last week before losing to Richmond in the second round on Sunday.

The 18-16 mark is Sendek's worst since the 2011-12 season, when the team went 10-22. Sendek has a lifetime record at Arizona State of 159-137.

Last year's Sun Devils made the NCAA tournament, losing in the Round of 64.
