Ole Miss Coach Pete Golding Addresses Dabo Swinney’s Tampering Allegations

In this story:
Back in January, shortly after the end of the college football season, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney announced the hire of Chad Morris as the school’s new offensive coordinator.
It was a reunion that was a longtime coming, as Morris is set to begin his second stint with the program after being with the school during its rise as a championship-level program.
An introductory press conference that seemed innocuous took a turn toward the unexpected when Swinney fired a shot at Ole Miss over the school’s transfer portal recruitment of linebacker Luke Ferrelli. Ferrelli ultimately decided to commit to the Rebels, where he is slated to be the school’s starting MIKE linebacker this fall.
Until now, Ole Miss coach Pete Golding had not commented on Ferrelli’s offseason recruitment. But with spring practice underway in Oxford, Golding was asked about his side of the story in regard to the pursuit of Ferrelli, and made sure to defend his program.
Here is Ole Miss coach Pete Golding’s response to Dabo Swinney’s allegations of tampering with linebacker signee Luke Ferrelli.

“Yeah, I mean, obviously, I think there’s two sides to every story, right?” Golding began. “And so I’m not going to sit up here and use the podium as a grandstand and all that, right? I mean, that’s why there is enforcement, that’s why we have a compliance office, right? They do all that. The bottom line, the recruitment of Luke. He came on an official visit, right, prior to the Fiesta Bowl, and I told him, ‘Hey, I want you to be our green dot Mike, but right now we got a green dot Mike, right? And that spot’s not going to be available until…we have one available.’ And so, I want you…he wants to be here. I said, ‘But right now, there ain’t a spot available. So if that spot becomes available, it’s yours, right?’ So it’s a kid that wanted to be here, that we wanted to be here, that at the end of it came open, and he’s here and we’re happy to have him.”
Dabo Swinney came out swinging against Golding and the Rebels for tampering
In January, Swinney went into detail about how Ole Miss came into contact with Ferrelli, and the alleged tampering that took place. Specifically, Swinney recounted how Ferrelli’s agent, Ryan Williams, informed the Clemson coach that the linebacker had been contacted by Ole Miss.
“[Clemson GM] Jordan Sorrells met with Luke face-to-face in his office and Luke communicated to Jordan and [Clemson assistant] Ben Boulware that Pete [Golding] texted him on Wednesday morning—the head coach at Ole Miss— when he was in his 8 a.m. class,” Swinney said. “And he said the text message said, ‘I know you’re signed. What’s the buyout?’ And Luke said that Coach Golding also texted him a picture of a $1 million contract. Luke also mentioned to Jordan and to Ben that Coach Golding had Trinidad Chambliss call him from his phone and that Coach Golding was there continuing to talk on his phone to push him to re-enter the transfer portal. He also said that Jaxson Dart had reached out and called him. But Luke again assured Jordan that he had no intention of leaving.”

Ferrelli, of course, ultimately entered the transfer portal and signed with Ole Miss.
Swinney criticized the state of college football’s transfer portal and the rampant tampering, blaming “the adults” for allowing this to happen.
“It’s total hypocrisy, because all this is going on while they on the other side are trying to fight their defensive end from going in the portal. They have accused publicly others of tampering with their roster and their players, while they are over here tampering. This is just a really sad state of affairs and it’s, to me, a broken system. If there are no consequences for tampering, then we have no rules and no governance. This is not about a linebacker at Clemson. I feel sorry for the young man, to be honest with you. I blame the adults. If you want to have an adult world, there needs to be adult consequences.”
Swinney said in January that the program had turned the allegations against Ole Miss in to the NCAA. So far, there has not been a ruling against the Rebels program regarding the tampering accusations.
