Oklahoma will sport a new look on certain Saturdays this fall. The school unveiled new alternate uniforms on Tuesday that will occasionally replace its traditional road and home uniforms in 2014.

The Sooners' new Nike threads feature several nods to the program's past. The alternate white helmet design pays homage to Oklahoma's national championships under former coach Bud Wilkinson in 1950, '55 and '56. Meanwhile, an alternate red helmet includes a woodgrain design inspired by the texture of the Sooner Schooner.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said the team's new alternate uniforms honor and respect the program's tradition. “The players are excited about them,” Stoops said in a statement. “It’s always positive to relate back to Bud Wilkinson’s era with the longest winning streak in college football history and three national championships. These uniforms give us a chance to do that.”

Traditionalists always get frustrated when classic uniforms undergo facelifts, but Oklahoma did a nice job of respecting tradition with the new alternate look. Plus, the team will continue to wear its classic uniforms for most of the season. For now, Oklahoma players seem to love the revamped style.
