Missouri re-enters top 25 in Week 6 AP poll after gutty comeback win

Publish date:

Don’t look now, but the SEC East, the ACC Coastal and the Big Ten West are neck-and-neck for most convoluted division in college football, and the AP poll is starting to reflect that. After Week 5, the SEC East might have pulled ahead — with Missouri (which lost to Indiana the week before) going into South Carolina and stealing a win away from the Gamecocks.

For its trouble Mizzou jumped back into the polls at No. 24, and the Gamecocks dropped out after being ranked No. 13 last week. UCLA jumped from No. 11 to No. 8 after the Bruins’ road win over Arizona State on Thursday night, while then-No. 15 Arizona State dropped out of the top 25 entirely.

The full top 25 is below (with first-place votes in parentheses). Three quick thoughts follow.

1 Florida State (27)

2 Oregon (13)

3 Alabama (13)

4 Oklahoma (7)

5 Auburn

6 Texas A&M

7 Baylor

9 Notre Dame

10 Michigan State

11 Ole MIss

12 Mississippi State

13 Georgia

14 Stanford

15 LSU

16 USC

17 Wisconsin

18 BYU

19 Nebraska

20 Ohio State

21 Oklahoma State

22 East Carolina

23 Kansas State

24 Missouri

25 TCU

1) Florida State’s stranglehold on No. 1 is slipping even more. The Seminoles had 34 first-place votes last week, and have just 27 after their 56-41 come from behind win in Raleigh over NC State. Voters gave Alabama and Oregon 13 votes each, and Oklahoma picked up seven. These aren’t the dominant bulldozing ‘Noles from last year, so they’re having to win in more creative ways. This isn’t to say that Florida State won’t be or can’t be playoff bound; there’s still plenty of talent there to win out in the ACC.

2) As a whole, the ACC has just one ranked team after Week 5. The much-maligned Big Ten has four ranked teams, the Big 12 has five, the Pac-12 has four and the SEC has eight, with seven teams in the top 15.

3) No. 12 Mississippi State, idle last week, heads into a huge matchup against No. 6 Texas A&M. The Aggies outlasted Arkansas, 35-28, in a tough overtime test on Saturday, and the Bulldogs could force their way into the top 10 with a win.
