Logwood leads New Mexico past No. 24 Colorado St

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) New Mexico coach Craig Neal wasn't too surprised that freshman reserve guard Sam Logwood was able to turn in a big night against Colorado State on Saturday.

Logwood scored 15 points on perfect shooting to help the Lobos hand the 24th-ranked Rams their first loss of the season, 66-53. Logwood was 5 for 5 from the field and 4 for 4 from the free-throw line.

''I always knew he was capable of being an all-league player,'' Neal said. ''He's one of those players that's in here on Sunday. This is nothing against Sam. But he couldn't make a 100 jump shots out of 400 when he first got here. Just coming in here on Sundays, he comes in here and shoots 600 to 1000 shots. And his shot has improved dramatically.''

It helped make up for subpar outings from New Mexico's leading scorers as Deshawn Delaney (14.4 ppg) finished with three points, and Hugh Greenwood (11.2) had four. Greenwood didn't make a shot until 6:55 remained and by then, the Lobos (10-4, 2-0 Mountain West) led 57-42.

''You beat a top-ranked team in the country with Hugh Greenwood and Deshawn Delaney not doing much,'' Neal said. ''So that says a lot about what you've done with your younger guys, how much they've improved and how much they've bought into the program.''

Colorado State Larry Eustachy could only shake his head when looking at Delaney's and Greenwood's stats.

''That's what's disappointing,'' he said. ''Because we still (lost).''

Daniel Bejarano led Colorado State (14-1, 1-1) with 13 points on 4-for-13 shooting.

The game was tight early as the teams traded the lead nine times in the opening 10 minutes before New Mexico created a little separation. But after Colorado State scored five straight to tie it at 25-all, the Lobos closed the first half on a 10-1 run, capped by an off-balance, buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Devon Williams, who added 13 points.

The Rams opened the second half with five quick points to pull to 35-31. New Mexico used an 18-4 surge to take its biggest lead to that point at 55-37 with 9:11 left.

But the Rams could never really untracked, Eustachy said.

''We could never get going because of them,'' he said. ''The crowd, the coach the players. We just couldn't get our team out there.''

Colorado State: Rams coach Larry Eustachy entered the game 0-5 against New Mexico, four times with Colorado State and once with Southern Mississippi.

New Mexico: The Lobos had not played a ranked team this season but came into the game 14-8 against ranked opponents since head coach Craig Neal arrived as an assistant in 2007.

Colorado State: F Tiel Daniels, who missed the previous two games with a calf injury, returned to the starting lineup Saturday. He finished with three points. ... F Stanton Kidd played the first 4 minutes before injuring his ankle and he did not return.

New Mexico: After the game, coach Neal that his son, G Cullen Neal will not return this season after suffering a high ankle sprain Nov. 20 against Boston College. . G Arthur Edwards, who missed eight games after surgery to repair a dislocated finger, had four points in his return to the lineup.
