Martin's 25 points helps LSU coast past Auburn, 84-61

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) Jarell Martin and LSU peppered Auburn with dunks and layups, then added a barrage of three-point bursts when the game got tight.

The result: A heavy dose of payback.

Martin scored 25 points and had 12 rebounds for his second straight big game and LSU shot a season-high 57.8 percent in an 84-61 rout of Auburn on Tuesday night.

LSU (20-8, 9-6 Southeastern Conference) repeatedly got the ball inside for often uncontested baskets and atoned for a loss earlier in February.

''Didn't take a whole lot trying to get our guys prepared for tonight's game,'' LSU coach Johnny Jones said.

LSU made 37 of 64 shots from the floor and outscored Auburn (12-16, 4-11) 52-18 in the paint.

Martin didn't cool down after pouring in a season-high 28 points and grabbing 13 boards in a weekend victory over Florida.

Jalyn Patterson had 16 points and seven assists and made four 3-pointers for LSU. Jordan Mickey added 14 points and Keith Hornsby scored 13.

LSU's backcourt helped set up some easy baskets for the big men. Tim Quarterman and Josh Gray had six assists apiece and LSU totaled 22.

''At the last game in Baton Rouge, there was a lot of criticism on our guards,'' Quarterman said. ''I just took it to heart and wanted to come here and get the win.''

Cinmeon Bowers led Auburn with 16 points and KT Harrell scored 14. Antoine Mason, who scored 29 in a blowout loss to No. 1 Kentucky, was held to six, 10 points below his season average.

''It's really difficult to score when you're constantly taking the ball out of the net,'' Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. ''It's frustrating and disappointing.''

LSU started scoring in threes after a nine-point second-half lead dwindled to three on K.C. Ross-Miller's jumper. It was all LSU after that.

Patterson, Martin and Hornsby hit 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions to fuel a 15-0 run over a 3:37 span.

Martin then drew fouls on made baskets twice in a row and hit both free throws for more old-fashioned three-point plays to push the game to 64-46, and Auburn never threatened from that point.

It was a dramatic turnaround from 19 days earlier when Auburn won 81-77 at LSU.

Auburn's Jordon Granger called the big discrepancy on points around the basket ''kind of embarrassing.''

Auburn was coming off a 110-75 loss to the Wildcats.

''I thought the effort was better than against Kentucky but the performance wasn't much different,'' Pearl said. ''We hurt ourselves with pressure. We really bothered LSU with the press up there, and we didn't get matched up. We played our press with no purpose at all.

''We just gave them way too many easy looks.''

LSU: First win at Auburn since 2012. Mickey blocked three shots to reach 100 for the second straight season. Shaquille O'Neal was the last LSU player to have 100 blocks in a season.

Auburn: Has lost three straight games and six in a row at Auburn Arena.

M&M SHOW

Auburn had no answer for Mickey and Martin. The frontcourt duo scored 14 of LSU's first 18 points and combined to make 10-of-14 shots in the first half. Mickey made 7 of 8 shots and Martin 11 of 17 for the game.

HARRELL & MASON

Auburn's top two scorers combined for 52 points in the first meeting and 20 in this one. Mason missed all five of his field goal attempts.
