Charlotte and head coach Alan Major have mutually agreed to part ways following a string of medical issues over the last year, the school announced on Sunday.

Majors took a leave of absence last summer to undergo a pair of eye surgeries and heart surgery. He also took another leave starting in January of this season.

During his five seasons at Charlotte, the 49ers went 75-81. Associate head coach Ryan Odom coached the team for the rest of the season during Major’s latest leave of absence.

Director of athletics Judy Rose said it was a difficult choice to make, but was ultimately best for the program.

Major thanked the school along with the basketball program in a statement.

“To my coaches and support staff: Ryan Odom, Desmond Oliver and Orlando Vandross are not only outstanding coaches but also great fathers, husbands and leaders. I thank them as well as our support staff and managers for their tireless dedication,” Major said. “To the players, both current and former: thank you for your efforts on and off the floor and for giving me the chance to coach you.  The former 49ers have blessed us by coming back for reunions and restoring pride to Charlotte basketball. To my family, friends and loyal fans: Thank you for your cheers, love and support. While we did not reach all of our goals, I am thankful that we achieved some historic victories on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.”

Charlotte did not make the NCAA tournament during Major’s tenure, but the 49ers played in the NIT in 2013. The school announced it will begin a national coaching search for Major’s replacement.
