VCU men's basketball coach Shaka Smart is in discussions with Texas about its head coach opening, reports Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

Texas announced Sunday that it had mutually parted ways with head coach Rick Barnes after 17 seasons.

Smart was hired as coach of the Rams in 2009. He has a 163–56 career coaching record in six seasons and has made five straight NCAA tournaments. In his second year as a coach, he guided VCU to the 2011 Final Four.

Rothstein reports that if Smart turns down the job, the Longhorns will likely "turn their attention to Utah's Larry Krystkowiak and Xavier's Chris Mack."

The Rams went 26–10 this season and were a No. 7 seed in the NCAA tournament. They lost to Ohio State in the Round of 64.

On Sunday, Yahoo's Pat Forde reported that Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall is interested in replacing Barnes at Texas.
