Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg to undergo second open heart surgery
Iowa State men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg will undergo open heart surgery to replace his aortic valve, the school announced Friday.
The school says the procedure will take place next Friday at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
“After my initial surgery to replace my aortic root 10 years ago, I knew that this was something that would need to be done at some point,” Hoiberg said. “My valve has severe regurgitation and the time has come to get it replaced. I am hopeful that this will be my last surgery and I’m looking forward to getting this behind me.”
Hoiberg had surgery to correct an enlarged aortic root in June 2005, which ended his 10-year career in the NBA.
Hoiberg, 42, is 115-56 in five seasons at Iowa State, leading the team to four straight NCAA tournament berths.
The Cyclones have won the Big 12 tournament title in each of the last two seasons. In 2014-15, Iowa State finished with a 25-9 record but was upset 60-59 by UAB in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
