Former Texas A&M Heisman Trophy winner, AD John David Crow dies at 79
Texas A&M’s first Heisman Trophy winner and former athletic director, John David Crow, died at age 79 in College Station, Texas, on Wednesday night.
Crow's family confirmed his death, but a cause of death has yet to be released. Crow’s wife, Carolyn, and family were by his side when he died.
Crow, born in Marion, La., won the Heisman in 1957. He was the only winner from Texas A&M until Johnny Manziel won the award in 2012. A two-way player, Crow rushed for 562 yards as a senior in 1957 and added six touchdowns and five interceptions.
The Chicago Cardinals later selected Crow in the first round of the 1958 NFL draft. He played 11 seasons with the Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers, appearing in 125 games and rushing for 4,963 yards and 38 touchdowns. As a receiver, he caught 258 passes for 3,699 yards and 35 touchdowns.
Crow was named to four Pro Bowls (1959, 1960, 1962, 1965) and the NFL 1960's All-Decade Team.
Crow later served as Texas A&M’s athletic director from 1989 to 1993 and associate athletic director from 1983 to 1989.
