Wofford junior Jeremiah Tate found dead after drowning in lake
Wofford basketball player Jeremiah Tate was found dead early Monday morning after drowning in a lake near Charlotte, the school announced. He was 19.
Tate was working as a counselor at a YMCA camp in South Carolina, just across the North Carolina border from Charlotte. Tate and another counselor planned to go swimming and jumped from the Buster Boyd Bridge, about 30 feet above Lake Wylie, around 2 a.m. Monday, a witness told Charlotte NBC affiliate WCNC.
Search and rescue divers found Tate's body about 120 yards from shore two hours later.
"The entire Wofford College family is devastated and saddened today by the loss of Jeremiah Tate," Wofford athletic director Richard Johnson said in a statement. "Jeremiah was such a dedicated, loved and respected member of the men's basketball team. He had a wonderful personality and had many friends on campus extending outside of the athletic department. Our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences are with his family. He will truly be missed."
Tate, a rising junior from Columbia, S.C., played thirteen games in his two seasons with the Terriers.
