Utah cornerback Dominique Hatfield arrested, charged with robbery
Utah starting cornerback Dominique Hatfield was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree felony aggravated robbery, jail records from the Salt Lake sheriff's office show. He is being held on a $50,000 bond.
Hatfield is accused of threatening a man with a knife and stealing $180 in cash.
Hatfield posted an ad online under the pseudonym “David Wilkins” saying he was selling an Xbox video game console, Salt Lake Unified Police deputy Justin Hoyal said, according to The Deseret News. A man responded to the ad and met Hatfield at a car wash early Tuesday evening, at which point Hatfield allegedly threatened the man with a knife and told him hand over his money. Hatfield then ran into a nearby apartment complex, police said.
Police apprehended Hatfield after the man had his wife call to inquire about an iPhone Hatfield also listed for sale. They arranged to meet at the same location, where officers were waiting, police said.
Hatfield, a rising junior, began his career as a receiver but switched to defensive back early last season. He started 10 games at cornerback, recording 32 tackles and an interception.
Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham has yet to comment on the situation. He is on vacation in an area without cell phone service, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.
