Utah's Dominique Hatfield suspended indefinitely after robbery arrest
Utah cornerback Dominique Hatfield has been suspended indefinitely after he was arrested on robbery charges last week, head coach Kyle Whittingham announced Monday.
“Given the serious nature of the charge against Dominique Hatfield, he has been suspended indefinitely from our program while we await further clarity from the legal system,” Whittingham said in a statement.
Hatfield was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree felony aggravated robbery. He is accused of threatening a man with a knife and stealing $180 in cash.
Hatfield, a rising junior, began his career as a receiver but switched to defensive back early last season. He started 10 games at cornerback, recording 32 tackles and an interception.
Hatfield posted an ad online under the pseudonym “David Wilkins” saying he was selling an Xbox video game console, Salt Lake Unified Police deputy Justin Hoyal said, according to The Deseret News. A man responded to the ad and met Hatfield at a car wash early Tuesday evening, at which point Hatfield allegedly threatened the man with a knife and told him hand over his money. Hatfield then ran into a nearby apartment complex, police said. He was arrested when he arranged to meet the man's wife at the same location, where police were waiting.
Whittingham had been on vacation when Hatfield was arrested.
