SEC teams to honor former commissioner Mike Slive
SEC teams will honor former commissioner Mike Slive with Prostate Cancer Awareness Games on each of the 14 campuses in September, the league announced Monday.
Slive, who has battled prostate cancer since the late 1990s, stepped down from his position in July after 13 years as SEC commissioner.
In May, before Slive's retirement, the 14 SEC Athletics Directors voted unanimously to recognize Slive in several games this season. During each game, the home team will wear a commemorative helmet sticker in honor of the former commissioner.
“The Athletics Directors saw this as an opportunity to recognize Mike Slive in a meaningful way while also bringing attention to an important topic that affects one in seven men in America during a lifetime,” said new SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. “While honoring our former commissioner for his great service to the SEC, we can also raise awareness and influence prevention of this disease.”
