Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn is hopeful that sophomore defensive lineman Carl Lawson will be able to return to the field sometime this season, reports James Crepea of the Alabama Media Group.

The news is a downgrade on his status that past two weeks, when Lawson had been expected to play and was a last minute scratch.

"We're still taking the day-by-day, week-by-week," Malzahn said. "When we get back next week we'll reassess. Maybe I'll have some more information."

Lawson played Week 1 in Auburn's 31–24 win over Louisville, picking up a sack and assisting on four tackles.

Lawson had his best season in 2013 as a freshman, tallying four sacks and 7 1/2 tackles for loss. He missed all of 2014 with a torn ACL.
