Mother of suspended Rutgers WR Leonte Carroo charged with assault
The mother of suspended Rutgers receiver Leonte Carroo was charged with assault along with two other people for their role in a Sept. 12 altercation outside the team's football headquarters.
Lavern Carroo, 41, and two other individuals connected to Carroo, 20-year-old Maria Vega and 52-year-old Juan Vega, were charged by Rutgers police for simple assault and disorderly conduct related to an incident after the team's loss to Washington State.
According to authorities they engaged in “general fighting behavior,” including hair pulling and striking a victim in the face.
After the game, Carroo was charged with simple assault after slamming a woman to a concrete surface outside the team's facility and was suspended indefinitely from the team a day later. Carroo reportedly had been intervening in an altercation involving two women he had been romantically involved with.
NJ.com reports it is believed Maria Vega had a romantic relationship with Carroo, though it is unclear whether the two incidents are directly related. Juan Vega's relationship to Maria also remains unclear.
The alleged victim in that incident worked for Rutgers football as a recruiting ambassador. Her father told NJ advance media his daughter did not provoke the dispute, that she has a restraining order against Carroo and that she quit her job with the athletic department.
