UCLA punter Adam Searl suspended after arrest for rape
UCLA walk-on punter Adam Searl has been charged with three counts of rape, the Los Angeles Police Department announced in a statement on Friday.
Searl was arrested on Thursday and released after posting $300,000 bail. The school announced Friday that it had suspended him from the team.
“We have been informed of the situation involving Adam Searl, and we take these accusations very seriously,” UCLA head coach Jim Mora said in a statement. “Adam has been suspended from the team indefinitely while the legal process runs its course. Due to the ongoing police investigation, we are unable to discuss this matter further at this time.”
According to the LAPD, Searl was arrested in connection with an alleged October 2014 sexual assault that took place at an off-campus apartment. A female UCLA student says she met Searl outside of a party before leaving with him to go to a nearby residence. She alleges she fell asleep and awoke to Searl sexually assaulting her.
There has been an ongoing investigation regarding the allegations against Searl for nearly a year, with Special Assault section of the LAPD’s Operations West Bureau working in conjunction with the UCLA campus police.
The 20-year-old from Irvine, Calif., began playing for the Bruins in 2014. He has punted five times for UCLA this season.
