Four-star guard Tyson Carter commits to Mississippi State
Mississippi State landed a commitment from four-star guard Tyson Carter on Tuesday.
Carter, who attends school a 10-minute drive away in Starkville, Miss. and is ranked No. 26 in the 2016 class by Rivals.com, announced his decision at his high school library, opting to stay home and join new coach Ben Howland’s Bulldogs. His father and high school coach, Greg Carter, played for the school from 1987–1991.
“I just feel like it was the best place for me as far as style of play and how I can fit in," Carter said. "Coach (Ben) Howland is a really good coach to play for. He's put a lot of guys in the NBA and I feel like it's a privilege to play for him. It was really appealing because just the way they played at UCLA, the style of play is really up and down and fun to watch. It would be really fun to be a part of.”
Carter, standing a lanky 6'4", visited Memphis, Arizona State and Miami in addition to the Bulldogs. He told reporters Mississippi State plans to play him at point guard, though he’s played both guard spots at the high school level. He led Starkville High to the 6A State championship last season averaging 17 points, five rebounds and two assists per game.
Howland has also obtained commitments from four-star guards Lamar Peters (No. 79 overall) and Eli Wright (No. 94) in this class. The former UCLA coach has established significant momentum on the trail, with the current crop of freshmen led by five-star guard Malik Newman expected to make a splash. Mississippi State continues to recruit players including four-star forward Mario Kegler, Carter’s AAU teammate, and the school reportedly is looking to take six players. Carter acknowledged his ongoing discussions with Kegler (No. 29 overall), a skilled, strong wing. The Bulldogs are also still recruiting four-star center SchniderHerard (No. 34).
