Texas A&M reopens quarterback competition after two straight losses
After two straight losses in which the team scored just 26 combined points, Texas A&M has reopened its quarterback competition, head coach Kevin Sumlin said Tuesday.
Incumbent Kyle Allen, freshman Kyler Murray and transfer Jake Hubenak will all compete for a chance to start Saturday’s game against South Carolina this week in practice.
Allen started the first seven games of the season for the Aggies, winning the first five, but has struggled over the past two weeks. In losses to Alabama and Ole Miss, he completed just a combined 32 passes in 74 attempts (43.2%) for 351 yards with a touchdown and four interceptions.
Murray, Allen’s backup, has appeared in five games this year, completing 17 of 31 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown and two interceptions. He was a four-star recruit out of high school in Allen, Texas according to Rivals, ranking 5th at the quarterback position and 71st in the country.
Their starting quarterback for Saturday’s game will be named Friday, according toThe Dallas Morning News.
