Michigan’s John Beilein signs extension through 2021
Michigan head coach John Beilein signed a contract extension that will keep him at the Wolverines’ helm through the 2020–21 season, the university announced Wednesday.
With the extension, Beilein will earn a base salary of $400,000, along with $1.47 million per season for media appearances and sponsorships and $1.5 million each year through the university’s retirement plan. The deal also comes with additional incentive pay based on his team’s performance.
“John is one of the most respected coaches in the country and revered people within the university community,” Michigan’s interim athletic director Jim Hackett said in a release. “While he has accomplished many great things on the basketball court, it is his leadership, guidance and role as an educator that truly makes him one of our great ambassadors. We look forward to John continuing to represent the University of Michigan for many years to come.”
Beilein, who has compiled a 717–428 record through 37 seasons as a college head coach, will enter his ninth year with Michigan this season. He has led the Wolverines to five NCAA tournament appearances in his tenure, including an appearance in the 2013 national championship game.
The Wolverines open the 2015–16 season on Nov. 13 at home against Northern Michigan.
