New Mexico forward Devon Williams (neck) taken off court on stretcher
New Mexico forward Devon Williams was taken off the court on a stretcher during Sunday’s game against New Mexico State.
Williams, a redshirt junior from Dallas, apparently collapsed with just over 11 minutes to play in the game. He was then taken to a hospital.
UNM head coach Craig Neal told reporters after the game that Williams was being evaluated for a neck injury. He said some members of the coaching staff would remain at New Mexico State to be with Williams.
According to several fans watching the game on television, Williams collapsed without being contacted. He reportedly remained face down on the floor for several minutes while being attended to by medical personnel.
Williams started 30 of the Lobos’ 31 games last season, averaging 6.7 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. He scored two points in 14 minutes of action during New Mexico’s season opener against Texas Southern on Friday.
