LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) Charles Cooke came up big for Dayton even with late-game foul problems.

Cooke scored 22 points to lead Dayton past Iowa 82-77 in the first round of the AdvoCare Invitational on Thursday night.

Cooke connected on two free throws to give Dayton a 78-77 lead with 50 seconds left. Scoochie Smith's layup extended the lead to 80-77 with 11 seconds to go.

"I think we have a really good resolve around us," Dayton coach Archie Miller said. "You take this win and try to build on it."

Cooke secured the win by hitting two more free throw with four seconds remaining. He played the final few minutes of the game with four fouls.

"I really wasn't thinking anything negative," Cooke said. "Just stay after the plays."

Dayton (4-0) also got 16 points from both Kendall Pollard and Kyle Davis.

Jarrod Uthoff had 18 points for Iowa (3-1)

Iowa used a 16-2 run to take a 75-71 lead with 3 minutes to play. Mike Gesell's long-range jumper ended the surge.

"Our offense didn't move smoothly at all first half," Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. "The start of the second half, it got away from us a little bit. A couple goofy plays. But the last 14 minutes I thought execution offensively was tremendous. We had great looks at the basket."

Davis ended a 7-0 run with a slam during the first minute of the second half that put Dayton ahead 52-39.

"Coach told us it was going to be a game of runs," Cooke said. "We weren't surprised by it at all. We just stuck in there like we always do."

The Flyers regained a double-digit advantage later when baskets by Cooke and Pollard made it 69-59 with 8 minutes to play.

Uthoff hit a 3-pointer that got Iowa within 65-59 midway through the second half.

Davis had 10 points as Dayton grabbed a 45-39 halftime lead.

Uthoff scored 15 first-half points for the Hawkeyes.
