Georgia fires head coach Mark Richt after 15 seasons
Georgia has fired head coach Mark Richt, according to a source.
Richt coached the Bulldogs for 15 seasons, compiling a 145–51 record, including two SEC titles. However, his most recent conference title came in 2005, and Georgia hasn’t reached the SEC title game since ’12. Richt was unable to capitalize on several recent down years in the SEC East, finishing third, second and tied for second in the division of the last three years.
The Bulldogs went 9–3 this season, including a 5–3 record in conference play. They ended their regular season with a 13–7 victory over rival Georgia Tech on Saturday.

Georgia came within a play of winning the SEC and reaching the national championship game when it battled Alabama in Atlanta in 2012. Trailing by four, the Bulldogs reached Alabama's eight-yard line with five seconds left. However, quarterback Aaron Murray's pass was tipped and fell into the hand of Chris Conley at the five-yard line, where he was tackled and time expired. The Crimson Tide advanced to beat Notre Dame for the national championship.
Richt came to Georgia in 2001 after serving as an assistant at Florida State from 1990-2000. He spent his first four seasons with the Seminoles coaching quarterbacks before adding offensive coordinator duties in ’94.
