Reed 3 gives No. 21 Miami lead in 77-72 OT win over Huskers

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) After winning its first five games by an average of 21 points, Miami has been tested in two straight.

The 21st-ranked Hurricanes pulled out a 77-72 overtime win over Nebraska in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Tuesday night, bouncing back after a one-point loss to Northeastern on a buzzer-beater last Friday.

''Coming into this game we knew that it was not going to be easy for us,'' senior point guard Angel Rodriguez said. ''We knew it was going to come down to the wire, and it did. We did everything we had to do to win the game. Whether it was pretty or not, I'm not quite sure. I'm just happy that we won.''

Davon Reed's 3-pointer gave Miami the lead in overtime and the Hurricanes made three free throws in the last 15 seconds. Rodriguez scored 15 points, Sheldon McClellan had 14 and Anthony Lawrence added 13 for the Hurricanes (6-1), who shot a season-low 41 percent. Miami made 23 of 28 free throws and outscored the Huskers by 14 at the line.

Shavon Shields scored a season-high 28 points for the Cornhuskers (5-3). Andrew White III had 13 points and Glynn Watson Jr. added 11.

The Big Ten and ACC are tied 4-4 after the second night of the Challenge. The remaining six games are Wednesday.

''These games are incredible - two great leagues battling,'' Miami coach Jim Larranaga said. ''For us, we represent the ACC, and to go on the road and win in overtime is a tremendous accomplishment.''

Reed had missed all eight of his shots in regulation before making a 3 from the wing with 2:36 left in overtime to put Miami ahead 71-70. The lead was 3 points after Kamari Murphy followed with a dunk.

The Huskers, trying for their first win over a ranked nonconference opponent since 2007, used their 3-point shooting and Shields' scoring to keep it close throughout. They made their first five 3-pointers, 6 of 9 in the first half and 9 of 18 for the game.

But they had difficulty dealing with Miami's size and kept sending the Hurricanes to the line. Coach Tim Miles noted the discrepancy in free throws.

''I need to watch film and take the emotion out of it,'' he said. ''Right now I'd say something that would get me in a heap of trouble.''

The Huskers were ahead 65-64 in the last minute after Andrew White III's steal and layin. Miami regained the lead when Rodriguez lobbed the ball underneath to Kamari Murphy, who softly put it in. Rodriguez then swiped the ball from Jack McVeigh and went in for a layup to make it 68-65.

Watson's 3 with 18.9 seconds left forced overtime.

Shields was 11 of 25 from the field, had five rebounds and made two steals.

''He carried our team,'' White said. ''Big players make big plays, and that's what he did. When you get in games like this, teams are so well scouted that most teams know what your sets are, they know what your tendencies are. So at that point, you just have to have guys that can go and make plays, and I think he did a good job of that tonight.''

Miami: Improved to 4-5 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and won for the first time in five road games in the event. ... Miami is 2-4 all-time against Nebraska.

Nebraska: Shields was a no-show for postgame interviews because he was getting treatment after getting kicked in a leg late in the game. ... Jake Hammond, who had his first double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds against Tennessee on Saturday, was held scoreless with three rebounds in 22 minutes. ... The game was a sellout, with attendance a season-high of 15,646.

LARRANAGA SEES OLD BOSS

Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst was the AD at Miami who hired Larranaga five years ago. Larranaga mentioned Eichorst and Nebraska senior associate athletic director Steve Waterfield, who also worked at Miami, in his postgame comments. ''It was important to me that we come in here and represent our program,'' Larranaga said. ''They hired me to do a good job. I want them to be proud of the job that we are doing.''
