Miami is expected to hire former Georgia head coach Mark Richt as its head coach, a source told SI's Thayer Evans.

Peter Ariz of CanesInSight.com first reported the news.

Richt, who played quarterback at Miami from 1979–1982, coached Georgia for 15 seasons starting in 2001 until he was fired earlier this week. He compiled a 145–51 record with the Bulldogs, including an 83–37 mark in conference play.

Richt will replace Al Golden, who was fired in October after a program-worst 58–0 loss to Clemson. Golden was an underwhelming 32–25 in four-plus seasons with the Hurricanes, who have yet to make the ACC championship game since joining the conference in 2004.

Richt was an assistant coach at Florida State before taking the Georgia job. He won two SEC championships with the Bulldogs but none since 2005. He also led the program to six SEC East division titles and won SEC coach of the year in 2002 and 2005.

The Hurricanes have not made a major bowl game since after the 2003 season, when they played Florida State in the Orange Bowl. Miami has not won a bowl game since 2006, having lost five in a row.
