Alabama holds off late Southern Miss rally for 58-55 win

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) Retin Obasohan scored a season-high 20 points and Alabama needed all of that and a bit of luck to hold off a late charge by winless Southern Miss, edging the Golden Eagles 58-55 Friday night after a potential game-tying shot lipped out.

Khari Price scored three quick baskets as the Golden Eagles (0-6) cut the gap to 58-55 with 15 seconds left. Dazon Ingram missed two from the line for Alabama (5-2). Price and Michael Ramey each launched 3-pointers in the last four seconds. Price missed wide, but Quinton Campbell grabbed the rebound and kicked it out to Ramey, whose potential game-tying shot circled the rim before coming out of the basket as time expired.

''You have to give credit to Southern Miss,'' Alabama coach Avery Johnson said. ''They came out and hit some big-time shots.''

''I am very disappointed we didn't win,'' Southern Miss coach Doc Sadler said. ''I know our team is disappointed. At the same time, this team is going to get better because they are working hard. We are playing better basketball. This team is going to win some games.''

Obasohan has scored between 17 and 20 points in four games this season, up from a 6-per-game average last season.

Arthur Edwards scored a career-high 17 points for the Tide, including five 3-pointers. His fifth trey capped Alabama's 19-4 run in which Southern Miss went scoreless for eight minutes of the second half as the Tide led 53-43 with 7:04 remaining. Obasohan sank two foul shots, pushing the lead to 58-51 with 1:40 to go, but those were the last points Alabama would score.

Price led the Golden Eagles with 16 points, including three 3-pointers, Eddie Davis III scored 11 with three 3-pointers.

Each team lofted 29 3-pointers, and each made 11.
