Journalist breaks leg when Iowa State fans storm court after win over Iowa
Des Moines Register sports columnist Randy Peterson sustained a compound fracture in his leg when Iowa State fans stormed the court after their team’s comeback victory over Iowa on Thursday, the Registerreports.
Peterson was scheduled to have surgery on his broken tibia and fibula late Thursday.
Peterson tweeted after the game that he believed his leg had locked with another person’s, and said he was not trampled by the rush of fans. Fans stormed the court after Iowa State earned an 83–82 victory over its rival following a game-winning shot with 10 seconds remaining from Cyclones guard Monte Morris.

Peterson’s first tweet after the incident said simply, “Ouch.”
“In fairness, we still do not know exactly what happened,” Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard said, according to the Associated Press. “However, at this point our thoughts our focused on Randy and his wife Patty, who is battling cancer. Coach (Steve) Prohm and I have both personally spoken with Randy and have assured him that we can do whatever we can to help them both through what they are dealing with.”
After fans stormed the court following a Kansas State win over Kansas last season, the Big 12 passed a measure allowing schools to be punished for failing to prevent fans from coming onto the court. In the Kansas State incident, Kansas coaches and players were pinned against a table, though there were no injuries.
