Michigan senior guard Spike Albrecht to leave team due to injuries
Michigan senior guard Spike Albrechtannounced Friday that he is leaving the team to continue his recovery from injuries.
Albrecht underwent two hip surgeries during the off-season.
“This has been the toughest decision I have ever had to make,” Albrecht said in a statement. “After taking a hard look at what is best for me, and this team, I will be stepping away from the game that has meant so much to me.
“I am so thankful for what Coach (John) Beilein, the assistants and the medical staff have done for me during my career and in particular over the last year while I was dealing with this injury. I just have a little more to go and I really need to take the proper time to finish my rehab.”

Albrecht has played in nine games this season, averaging just 8.1 minutes and 1.7 points per game. During his Michigan career, he has logged 453 points for a 41.5% field goal percentage in 115 games. He spent two years as team captain, and was named Michigan’s co-MVP last season.
“This has been an agonizing decision for Spike, especially at this juncture of the season,” Beilein said. “He has done so much to get back to this point, but his long-term health is what is most important now and in the future. We want only the best for Spike.”
Michigan (6–3) will play Delaware State (0–8) on Saturday.
