Trinity Valley off. coordinator Clay Patterson to become NEO head coach
Trinity Valley Community College offensive coordinator Clay Patterson has accepted the head coaching job at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, according to a source.
Patterson’s offense put up video game-like stats at Trinity Valley this season, leading all junior college programs with 57.7 points per game and 656.1 yards per game. Quarterback Jerod Evans, who topped all junior college passers with 395.5 yards passing per game, signed with Virginia Tech earlier this week.
One of college football’s brightest young offensive minds, Patterson finished his playing career at Southeastern Oklahoma State, where he got his stat in coaching as a part-time assistant coaching wide receivers in 2003. He moved to Tarleton State three years later in the same role before heading to Texas A&M-Kingsville the next year to serve as offensive coordinator at just age 25.
During his first year at Texas A&M-Kingsville, Patterson developed his spread, no-huddle attack, which went on to break 28 individual and 17 team offensive records by the time he left after 2012. Patterson’s offense has continued smashing records at Trinity Valley since he arrived in 2013, including setting what is believed to be an all-level record for total offense last year with 7,778 yards.
The 34-year-old Patterson now takes over for Ryan Held at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, after Held left earlier this month to join new UCF coach Scott Frost’s staff. Held coached NEO for two seasons, going 9–11 at the perennial junior college powerhouse.
