Patrick, Perry staying at North Texas under new coach Seth Littrell
North Texas defensive line coach Kevin Patrick and running backs coach/special teams coordinator Tommy Perry are being retained by new Mean Green coach Seth Littrell according to a source.
This season was Patrick's second year in his position at North Texas. Before that, he was South Florida's defensive tackles coach for six seasons.
While with the Bulls, the 44-year-old Patrick coached future NFL players in Jason Pierre-Paul, George Selvie and Terrell McClain. A West Palm Beach, Fla. product, Patrick was a star defensive end at Miami from 1989 through 1993.
This past season was Perry's third in his positions at North Texas. Before that, he also coached running backs and special teams at South Alabama for four seasons.
He was a special teams assistant and strength coach for NFL Europe’s Amsterdam Admirals in the spring of 2006. He went to work at Alabama that fall, spending a combined three years, first as a graduate assistant and then as an intern.
Perry coached Texas A&M-Commerce's running backs and kickoff returns in 2005 after working as the program's linebackers coach and a strength coach in 2004. He got his start at Texas also in 2004 as an assistant strength and conditioning coach as well as an academic advisor.
He played at Tyler Junior College before finishing his career at Texas A&M in 2003. Littrell was hired earlier this month and is regarded as one of college football’s brightest young offensive minds.
This season was Littrell's second as assistant head coach for offense and tight ends coach at North Carolina. Under him, the Tar Heels had one of the nation's most prolific offenses this season with their fast-paced spread attack.
The 37-year-old Littrell replaces former North Texas coach Dan McCarney who was fired in October amidst an 0-5 start. McCarney had a 22-32 record in his five seasons with the Mean Green.
They finished with a 1-11 record this season, including a 1-7 mark in Conference USA, and were among the nation’s worst offensively.
