Gonzaga center Przemek Karnowski will miss the rest of the season after having back surgery on Thursday, head coach Mark Few announced.

The 7'1" senior was averaging 8.8 points and 5.4 rebounds in five games this season. He had been out since Nov. 27, missing six games with a back issue that Few had referred to as a bulging disc problem. Karnowski had been seriously hampered by the injury and was experiencing discomfort simply sitting on the bench.

Karnowski could potentially be eligible for a medical redshirt since he will have played in under 30% of the team’s games. He averaged 10.9 points per game last season while shooting over 62% from the floor, and is considered one of the better interior scorers in the country.

The Bulldogs will lean even more on Kyle Wiltjer and Domantas Sabonis to anchor the frontcourt. Sabonis’s play in particuar has been stellar since Karnowski’s injury, with five double-doubles in the past eight games, including a 36-point, 16-rebound performance against Tennessee.
