TCU QB Trevone Boykin suspended for Alamo Bowl after arrest
TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin has been suspended for Saturday’s Alamo Bowl after he was arrested following a bar fight early Thursday morning, head coach Gary Patterson announced.
“Trevone Boykin and [junior receiver] Preston Miller have been suspended for Saturday’s game due to a violation of team rules,” Patterson said in a statement. “We are disappointed in their actions and apologize to the TCU Horned Frogs Nation, Valero Alamo Bowl and city of San Antonio.”
Boykin was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and public intoxication after an altercation at a San Antonio bar, according to News 4 San Antonio.
ESPN’s Mark Schlabach reported Boykin was in his room at midnight, but went out again after TCU coaches performed the curfew check.
Around 2 a.m., Boykin reportedly attempted to start a physical altercation with patrons of the bar after they recognized him and began heckling him. He took a swing at one of the patrons, but missed and hit an employee, which led to he and his friends being thrown out of the bar.
When San Antonio police arrived to break up the fight, Boykin was being held back by his friends when he swung at an officer, police said, according to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.
Boykin became so belligerent, police had to hold him down on the ground as he continued to struggle. Police threatened to use a stun gun on him before he ultimately calmed down.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said the officer Boykin struck was not severely injured but was treated for bruises and abrasions after Boykin hit him in the face.
Boykin was in San Antonio in preparation for the Alamo Bowl against No. 15 Oregon, which will be held on Saturday at the Alamodome.
The senior quarterback finishes his career with the Horned Frogs with 10,727 passing yards and 86 touchdowns in 48 games. He threw for 3,574 yards this season to surpass Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton as TCU’s all-time leader in passing yards.
Boykin apologized for the incident via Twitter on Thursday night.
