Ex-Kentucky WRs coach Mainord accepts job at North Texas
Former Kentucky wide receivers coach Tommy Mainord is the new inside wide receivers coach for North Texas coach Seth Littrell according to a source.
Mainord was let go as Kentucky’s wide receivers coach last month after three seasons. Before that, he was Texas Tech’s outside receivers coach for three seasons after three years as Lamar’s offensive coordinator.
Mainord was an assistant at Sam Houston State from 2005–07. He coached the Bearkats’ wide receivers his first season before switching to running backs and then moving back to wide receivers his last season.
He was quarterbacks and running backs coach at his alma mater, Tarleton State, from 2002–04 after being promoted following two seasons as a graduate assistant. He got his start in coaching at Tarleton State in 1999 as a student assistant after playing baseball for the Texans.
Mainord joins the staff of Littrell, who was hired last month and is regarded as one of college football’s brightest young offensive minds. This past season was Littrell’s second as assistant head coach for offense and tight ends coach at North Carolina.
Under him, the Tar Heels had one of the nation’s most prolific offenses this season with their fast-paced spread attack. The 37-year-old Littrell replaces former North Texas coach Dan McCarney, who was fired in October amidst an 0–5 start.
McCarney had a 22–32 record in his five seasons with the Mean Green. They finished with a 1–11 record this season, including a 1–7 mark in Conference USA, and were among the nation’s worst teams offensively.
