Ex-Boise State cornerback-turned-secondary coach Julius Brown fired
Boise State secondary coach Julius Brown has been let go after two seasons according to sources.
It’s a surprising move by Broncos coach Bryan Harsin, who brought Brown, a former Boise State cornerback and teammate, with him from Arkansas State. But while the Broncos are 12th this season in the FBS in total defense (318.3 yards per game), they struggled at times against the pass, surrendering 210.1 yards per game, which is 45th nationally.
Yet Boise State still finished with 22 interceptions this season, which is fourth-best in the FBS. Last season, the Broncos also had 22 interceptions, good for fifth-best nationally.
Montana State defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander, a Boise State cornerback from 2002-06, is expected to replace Brown according to sources.
Prior to Brown’s two seasons back in Boise, he was cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator at Arkansas State under Harsin in 2013. He coached Troy’s cornerbacks in 2012 after three seasons as Boise State’s director of player personnel.
The Stockton, Calif. native was a graduate assistant for the Broncos from 2006-08 and the defensive backs coach at Capital High in Boise in 2005. He played for Boise State from 1999 through 2003.
The Broncos had a 9-4 record this season, including a 55-7 win over Northern Illinois in last month’s Poinsettia Bowl. Harsin has a 21-6 record in his two seasons with them.
