Oregon State suspends Jarmal Reid at least four games for tripping referee
Oregon State suspended forward Jarmal Reid for a minimum of four games after he appeared to intentionally trip a referee, the school announced on Monday.
“We are obviously very disappointed and apologize to everyone involved,” head coach Wayne Tinkle said. “Our university and our program do not condone this type of conduct on or off the court. We acted swiftly and severely, but also fairly with the understanding that we are dealing with a 22-year-old young man that we need to help grow through this tough situation.”
The incident occurred during the Beavers’ 59–53 loss to Utah on Sunday. After blocking a shot and falling to the ground, Reid looked upset that there was no foul call on the play. Afterwards, he stuck his right leg out and tripped the nearest official, sending him to the ground. He was immediately assessed a technical and was ejected after a review.
According to a press release from the school, Reid’s “conduct and attitude in the next two weeks will determine whether any further action is warranted beyond the four-game suspension.”
The Pac-12 conference announced on Monday that it affirmed the disciplinary actions taken by the school, and the conference will not suspended Reid any further.
In a statement, Reid apologized to the school, the Pac-12 conference, the officials, his teammates and family for his actions.
“I was not raised to act in that manner that was displayed on that play,” Reid said. “I’m well aware that I made a mistake that has damaged my image. My actions are inexcusable and I am willing to accept any and all consequences that are to follow.”
The forward is averaging 4.2 points, 2.2 rebounds and 15.7 minutes per game for the Beavers this season. The senior will be allowed to practice with the team during his suspension, but will not be with the team on game days.
