Charlotte hires NC State's Ulrick Edmonds as OLBs coach
North Carolina State quality control director Ulrick Edmonds is the new outside linebackers coach for Charlotte coach Brad Lambert, according to a source.
Edmonds spent the past two seasons in his position at NC State, where his wife, Lindsay, is an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team. He replaces former Charlotte outside linebackers coach Napoleon Sykes Jr., who left last month to become Navy’s defensive line coach.
Prior to his time in Raleigh, Edmonds was Old Dominion’s linebackers coach for seven months. That was after working at his alma mater, James Madison, from 2001–13.
A renowned recruiter in Virginia’s ever-fertile Tidewater area, Edmonds was an assistant for his final nine seasons at James Madison, working in roles such as tight ends coach, running backs coach and recruiting coordinator during that span. He coached eight all-conference running backs while with the program and helped the Dukes win the FCS national championship in 2004.
Before that, he was an assistant in James Madison’s judicial affairs office for a year and admissions office for another year. A Crewe, Va., product, Edmonds got his start in coaching with the Dukes in 2001 as a defensive assistant. He was a defensive lineman for them from 1997–2000.
Charlotte had a 2–10 record this past season in its first campaign as a full-time FBS member. The 49ers got their first FBS win in a season-opening 23–20 triumph at Georgia State, which went to finish the season 6–7 and earn a berth in the Cure Bowl. Lambert has a 12–22 record in his three seasons at Charlotte.
