UCLA coach Steve Alford returns one-year contract extension

After a 15–17 season, UCLA Bruins coach Steve Alford has returned the one-year contract extension he signed in Oct. 2014, he announced in a letter on Sunday.
Alford’s extension would have kept him on campus through the 2020–21 season.

“I let Dan Guerrero know that I wanted to return the one-year contract extension I received after the 2013–14 season,” Alford wrote. “This request has since been processed.
“At the end of the day, year three was clearly not up to UCLA standards. My coaching staff and I fell short not only of our own expectations, but the expectations of Dan, the Chancellor and you, our fans. As a coaching staff, we intend to earn that extension back.”
Alford went 50–23 and reached the Sweet 16 twice in his first two seasons as Bruins coach. Under his watch in 2015–16, UCLA finished 10th in the Pac 12 for the first time in the school’s history.
