Syracuse upsets No. 1 South Carolina in women’s Sweet 16

The fourth-seeded Syracuse women’s basketball team knocked off No. 1 South Carolina 80–72 in the Sioux Falls Region semifinal on Friday night to advance to the Elite Eight. The loss was just the Gamecocks’ second all season.

The fourth-seeded Syracuse women’s basketball team knocked off No. 1 South Carolina 80–72 in the Sioux Falls Region semifinal on Friday night to advance to the Elite Eight. The loss was just the Gamecocks’ second all season.

The Orange were down 13 points in the first half, and six points late in the fourth, but overcame thanks to strong performances from Alexis Peterson and Briana Butler. Peterson scored a game-high 26, while Butler added 18 and helped Syracuse take the lead for good with three minutes to go in the game.

Syracuse will take on the winner of Tennessee-Ohio State in the Elite Eight on Saturday afternoon.
