Michigan guard Spike Albrecht has been granted his release from the school and plans to transfer to play a fifth year with another program, he told ESPN on Monday.

Albrecht’s senior season was cut short by injuries after he underwent two hip surgeries during the off-season. The former Michigan MVP played in just nine games in the 2015–16 season and averaged 1.7 points in 8.1 minutes per game.

He announced he was stepping away from the team in December, and his college career was presumed to be over. He noted on Monday that he would have liked to stay at Michigan, but there was not an available scholarship for him.

“I just didn't feel like I was helping the team this year,” Albrecht told ESPN. “I wasn’t close to 100 percent, but now I feel great and want to find a good situation where I can play and help a team.”
