Porter is familiar with the neighborhood as he played 10 seasons for the Portland Trail Blazers in his career. Former Trail Blazers Michael Holton and Larry Steele have also coached the Pilots.

He will take over for Eric Reveno, who served as the Pilots head coach for 10 years and finished with a 140–178 record.
