Former Penn State coach Joe Paterno was told that assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was sexually abusing children as early as 1976, according to PennLive.com.

According to the report, a child approached Paterno that year with allegations that he had been molested by Sandusky.

The reference to the incident was found in a court order for an insurance case involving Penn State.

The court order also states that an unnamed assistant coach witnessed Sandusky engage in inappropriate contact with children in 1987 and 1988.

The opinion, written by Judge Gary Glazer, states that there is no evidence that the reports against Sandusky ever reached the school’s administration.

Sandusky is currently serving prison time after being found guilty on 45 counts of sexual abuse.

Paterno died in Jan. 2012.
