Montana St. DBs coach Alexander to serve in Bill Walsh fellowship
Montana State defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander will serve this summer in the Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to a source.
The highly regarded Alexander was hired at Montana State in December after spending this past season coaching the secondary at Indiana State. The annual fellowship was launched in 1987 and is aimed to create more job opportunities for minority coaches.
Prior to last season, the 31-year-old Alexander was a graduate assistant at Washington in 2014 and Arkansas State in 2013. Before that, he coached at his alma mater, Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) High School, after playing safety for five seasons in the NFL.
Alexander was a second-round pick by the Detroit Lions in 2007 after spending five seasons at Boise State. The Buccaneers have a new coach in Dirk Koetter, who was promoted in January from offensive coordinator.
Koetter replaces former coach Lovie Smith, who was fired in January after a 6-10 record last season.
