Nebraska punter Sam Foltz and former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler were killed in a car crash Saturday night in Wisconsin.
Nebraska chancellor Ronnie Green confirmed the news to the Omaha World-Herald on Sunday. Police confirmed to the Lincoln Journal-Star that Sadler was driving the car. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene. Also in the vehicle was LSU punter Colby Delahoussaye, who was transported to a local hospital. The three were traveling from a weekend punter’s camp in Wisconsin.
"Sam was universally loved and respected by everyone he touched and on whom he had a positive influence each and every day,” Nebraska coach Mike Riley said in a statement. “His tragic loss is immeasurable to his family, his friends, his classmates, his teammates and his coaches and our thoughts and prayers are with all of them. The young men in our football program are hurting but I know that their strength of character and resolve will bring us together and we will honor Sam every day moving forward.”
Foltz was the Big Ten Punter of the Year last season and led the conference with 44.2 yards per punt. He was on the Ray Guy watch list for best punter in the nation this season.
Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio was among many remembering Sadler on Sunday, sending out a tweet in his memory.
Nebraska announced it will not send a contingent to the upcoming Big Ten media days.
