Ryan Burns will start under center for Stanford in Week 1 against Kansas State, the team announced Wednesday.

Burns, a senior, beat out redshirt sophomore Keller Chryst for the job. Chryst is also expected to see playing time in the opener.

With longtime starter Kevin Hogan, the program’s all-time winningest passer, off to the pros, Burns will get the first crack at field time.

Burns stands 6'5" and has appeared in six games in the last two seasons and completed one pass for 13 yards in 2014. He was a highly rated recruit as a high school player in Virginia, but hardly played due to Hogan’s success and durability.

Stanford plays Kansas State September 2 in Palo Alto.
