NCAA will relocate tournament games from North Carolina over bathrom law
The NCAA is relocating seven championship events, including the opening two rounds of the men’s basketball tournament, out of North Carolina over the state’s controversial bathroom law.
The law, known as HB2, limits anti-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay and transgender people.
“Fairness is about more than the opportunity to participate in college sports, or even compete for championships,” NCAA president Mark Emmert said in a statement. “We believe in providing a safe and respectful environment at our events and are committed to providing the best experience possible for college athletes, fans and everyone taking part in our championships.”
The NCAA cited the fact that the state provides legal protections for government officials who refuse to serve the LGBT community, and that five other states have banned representatives of public institutions from traveling to North Carolina.
In addition to the men’s basketball tournament, other Division I championships that will be moved include women’s soccer and lacrosse.
The NBA notably moved its upcoming All-Star Game out of North Carolina over the law.
