Notre Dame has fired defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, the school announced Sunday

The Irish lost 38–35 at home against Duke on Saturday and fans chanted for VanGorder to be fired throughout the game.

Notre Dame is 1–3 this season and has allowed at least 36 points in all three games against Power Five opponents. The Irish lost 36–28 to Michigan State last week and were defeated 50–47 by Texas in the opener. Their only win is a 39–10 win over Nevada.

Defensive analyst Greg Hudson will be the interim defensive coordinator.

“This is a difficult decision,” head coach Brian Kelly said in a statement. “I have the utmost respect for Brian as both a person and football coach, but our defense simply isn't it where it should be and I believe this change is necessary for the best interest of our program and our student-athletes.”

VanGorder joined Notre Dame in 2014 after one season coaching linebackers with the New York Jets. He was previously the defensive coordinator for Auburn and the Atlanta Falcons.
