Texas Tech Fire Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury
Texas Tech has fired head coach Kliff Kingsbury after six seasons with the Red Raiders, the school announced Sunday. KENS 5 in San Antonio was the first to report.
Kingsbury failed to register a winning season in each of the past three years, going 35–40 at Texas Tech. The Red Raiders are 19–35 in Big 12 play since Kingsbury took over in 2013.
"I'd like to thank Kliff Kingsbury for his six years of dedication leading our football program," Texas Tech athletics director Kirby Hocutt said. "He's worked very hard and represented us in a first-class manner."
Texas Tech started the season on a hot streak, winning five of its first seven games. But the Red Raiders ended the year on a five-game losing streak, playing the final three games without starting quarterback Alan Bowman.
Kingsberry coached his fair share of impressive quarterbacks aside from Bowman. Patrick Mahomes led the Red Raiders' attack in 2015 and 2016, preceded by Davis Webb and Baker Mayfield.
Kingsbury started at quarterback for three seasons at Texas Tech, throwing for 12,429 yards from 1999-2002. He tossed 45 touchdowns in his senior season, leading the nation in passing touchdowns, yards and completions.
The Red Raiders have not won their conference since 1994. Their last double-digit win season came in 2008, winning 11 games under Mike Leach.
