North Carolina Hires Mack Brown as Next Head Coach
Mack Brown was hired as the next head coach of North Carolina after he and the school reached an agreement on a contract, the school announced Tuesday.
Brown's hiring was first reported by 247Sports.com. According to Stadium's Brett McMurphy, Brown will receive a five-year deal.
The 67-year-old Brown was an analyst at ESPN. Brown was originally hired at UNC in 1988 and led the Tar Heels to three 10-win seasons and three bowl victories before being hired away by Texas in 1998.
"The best part of coaching is the players – building relationships, building confidence, and ultimately seeing them build success on and off the field," Brown said in a statement. "We can't to wait to meet our current student-athletes and reconnect with friends, alumni and fellow Tar Heel coaches. We thank UNC's Board of Trustees, Chancellor Folt and Bubba Cunningham for supporting our return to the Carolina family."
He had his biggest success with the Longhorns, winning the national championship in 2005 with Vince Young as his quarterback. He resigned at the end of the 2013 season after failing to reach double-digit victories in four straight years.
Brown replaces Larry Fedora, who was fired after seven seasons and a 45–43 record, including a 2–9 mark this season.
In 30 seasons as a head coach at Appalachian State, Tulane, UNC and Texas, Brown has a career-record of 244-122-1.
